OUR STORY : RE LUMI

It’s fair to be skeptical. We were too. After all, how different can a spatula and a puff really be? As it turns out, quite a lot.

The difference shows up where it matters most: in the finish. How thinly and evenly foundation lays on the skin, how seamlessly it presses in, how much product stays on your face instead of disappearing into the tool—and ultimately, how your makeup looks, not just from a distance, but up close.

Then there are the details you notice over time: the curve of an edge, the calibration of its thickness, the feel of a material against the skin, the balance in your hand, how easily it cleans, and how well it holds up through repeated use. None of these details is dramatic on its own, but together, they change the entire experience.

That is how we think genuine luxury works. It is rarely about adding more. It is about paying closer attention to what is already there and refining it until the difference becomes something you can see, feel, and appreciate every day.

Anyone who appreciates a beautifully balanced chef’s knife, a fountain pen that glides just right, or a precisely tailored jacket already understands the idea: the smallest details are often the ones you live with the most.

That mindset became RE LUMI.

WHY WE EXIST

For years, I spent more time on my base makeup than any other part of my routine. I could leave the house loving my foundation, only to check the mirror at lunch and find it oxidized, cakey, and no longer looking like my skin. Naturally, I blamed the foundation. So I kept researching and buying the ones everyone swore by. At one point, I had more than twenty foundations at home—many barely finished before I moved on to the next. It was expensive, wasteful, and still wasn’t solving the problem.

Eventually, I started to wonder: What if the foundation wasn’t the only variable? That was when I discovered makeup spatulas. Even a basic one let me apply foundation more thinly and evenly, using less product for a finish that looked more like skin. It was better, but it made me wonder: could it be even better?

That curiosity led me deeper into Korean beauty communities and the corners of the internet where people obsess over details most of us never think to question. Eventually, I came across ultra-thin art spatulas that a small circle of beauty enthusiasts had quietly begun using for makeup. That was my *eureka* moment. The application was beautifully thin and controlled—but the tool itself had been made for paint, not for a face.

**What if we kept what made it work, and redesigned everything else with beauty in mind?** That question became the starting point for RE LUMI—and changed the way I thought about beauty tools altogether. We spend so much time researching formulas, shades, ingredients, and finishes, yet rarely give the same attention to the tools responsible for putting those products onto our skin. A puff is just a puff. A spatula is just a spatula. At least, that is what I used to think.

We didn’t set out to reinvent beauty. We simply took a part of the routine that had been overlooked—and gave it the attention we wished it had all along.

THE HARDER PATH

We could have launched much faster. Ready-made designs, catalog products, and lower-cost manufacturing were all within reach. But if we were going to create a tool meant to touch your skin every day—and stay with you for years—we wanted every decision to feel intentional.

So we took the longer route. Nearly a year went into refining details that can seem almost invisible until you use them: the thickness of the edge, the angle of application, the balance in your hand, the material, and the finish against the skin. Prototype after prototype, each adjustment was made with one question in mind: does this make the experience better?

That same standard shaped how we chose to make it—in Korea, from 316L stainless steel, with a one-piece construction and hand-finished details rather than settling for the easiest available option.

Because the details that seem smallest on paper are often the ones you feel most in use.

SUSTAINABILITY THROUGH LONGEVITY

From the beginning, performance and responsibility were never separate ideas. We believe one of the most meaningful ways to make a beauty tool more sustainable is simply to make it worth keeping.

For our signature spatula, that meant choosing durable, non-porous 316L stainless steel and designing for longevity rather than replacement. For our puffs, it meant looking just as closely at material choices. We tested sample after sample, comparing feel, performance, absorption, and durability before choosing a construction that includes a corn-derived bio-based layer.

The process was never about choosing a material simply because it sounded more sustainable. It still had to perform beautifully. That balance—better performance, thoughtful materials, and less unnecessary replacement—is what we continue to work toward with every product we create.

No product is perfect, and neither are we. But we believe every detail is an opportunity to make a better choice.

The Core: Mundane of Excellence

Excellence is rarely built through singular, dramatic change. More often, it is forged through small improvements repeated consistently over time.

Whether it’s the simple habit of drinking a glass of water first thing in the morning or practicing a moment of mindfulness, these tiny, seemingly 'powerless' actions hold far more lasting strength than any grand gesture. A better tool. A safer material. A more grounded routine. A series of tiny fixes eventually compounds, shaping bigger outcomes than we often realize. This is the very root of why we call our philosophy Mundane of Excellence.

To look at the collective impact of these micro-choices, the numbers speak for themselves. Every single year, an estimated 900 million makeup brushes end up in landfills. It’s a staggering number, but if just 10% of us make the conscious switch to a permanent tool today, we would collectively save 90 million brushes from landfills annually. (Think of it less as a sales pitch, and more as a bit of math from our inner nerd about how much one small choice matters. ;) )

Beyond this collective impact, there is the immediate, personal excellence you feel every morning. The satisfaction of a flawless, near-perfect base and the added confidence it brings will create a positive ripple effect through your morning, your day, and ultimately, your life—one that might be even more meaningful to you right now than the thought of decreasing landfills.

The goal is simply to offer a better solution that elevates the result without compromising your routine. We want to provide the options that make your everyday life slightly better, one conscious choice at a time. Because the mundane rituals we repeat every single day are the ones that deserve the absolute most attention.

Join Our Journey

I have so much more to say about our puffs and the intentionality behind them, but I’ll save those stories for our blog and Instagram to keep this short. I am so excited for the narrative of 'Beauty that is kind to all' that we will write together. We invite you to join us on this journey!
With much love,
